The Work

The Role of the Pastoral Care Worker

Pastoral Care Work is a very varied role and a Job Description is written for each school where a worker is based. This enables the worker to focus on the particular needs of the pupils in that school. Pastoral care of the pupils and some other aspects of the work include:

Giving time to listen and talk with any pupil in the school
Responding to immediate situations as they arise and plan proactively

Working with individuals or small groups on issues raised
e.g. Friendship / self esteem / conflict resolution / social skills etc.

Meeting with parent/carer of a pupil to discuss issues relating to their life in school

Liaising with school management and teaching staff regarding pupils' welfare

“As a teacher I think the work of the Pastoral Care Worker is invaluable. I think every school should have one. The PCW is a valuable asset to the school being able to work with children and I know parents and teachers have really appreciated the help and support they are able to give”
